Cilla says she'll sue Rita through the civil courts for more compensation.
While Rita might have the finance for such a fight, she doesn't think she's
got the energy. She takes Emily and Norris out for champagne and announces
she's selling t'Kabin - lock, stock and Tunnock's. Emily and Norris
stare at Rita in suprise and do they see tears in Rita's eyes or is it just
the reflection of the champagne bubbles? (Note to self: stop being so flowery
and just get on with it or you'll get letters. Note back to self: ok).
Norris wastes no time in asking Rita if she'd sell for five thousand pounds
less than the asking price, if someone were interested, someone like him.
Rita tells him to put his bid in wi'estate agent like the rest of 'em and
Norris isn't best pleased. Meanwhile, Fiz has a chat with Chesney
over chips. The poor lad's starved and as the meal warms him up, he
tells his big sister all about Cilla's plan for more compo for his so-called
accident. Fiz goes to Les' house and Les confirms what Cilla's up
to. Fiz tells her mum that if she doesn't drop the case, and pay back
Rita the money she's already been awarded, she's prepared to lie in court
and tell anyone who cares to listen that it isn't the first time Cilla's
conned her kids into lying to get money from a newsagent over a trumped-up
accident. She'll say Cilla forced her into doing the same thing when
she were a kid. Cilla sees sense, Rita gets her money back and there's
a smile on her face as changes her mind about selling the Kabin.
Janice calls on Harry at home to have a chat about summat or nowt but
the pair of them end up in tears. If she'd survived leukaemia, it would
have been Harry's daughter's 21st birthday. Janice empathises with him and
tells him about how much she still misses Dennis and the two of them shed
tears on his sofa, and I joined in on mine - this was a particularly strong,
emotional scene that didn't miss a beat even when Harry told Janice his
wife had run off with a milkman called Ernie. Driving the fastest milk
cart in the west wouldn't have spread Harry's news any quicker than Janice
Battersby did. She told Eileen, she told the factory girls, they all know
Harry's secrets and he's very unhappy, wondering just who he can trust.
Karen's distraught with her poxy bridesmaids as they'll still be covered
in calomine lotion by the date of the wedding. So, it's up to Fiz,
Janice and Hayley to step in at the last minute. They alter the red
bridesmaid's dresses in the factory after hours, Karen's over the moon
when she sees them all dolled up in their finery and there's hugs all round.
What she doesn't know is that Tracy's cancelled everything and Steve only
finds out when he goes to the wedding place to drop off the seating plan.
The penny drops and he knows Tracy's behind it. It's a few days before
Valentine's and the only place available at such short notice is hugely expensive
but it's all he can get. He makes a few more phone calls and the wedding
that Tracy had tried so hard to cancel, is back on, but more expensive.
And this was the week that Tracy gave birth to Steve McDonald's baby,
The newest Corrie woman weighed in at 6lb 4oz, a bundle of pink with a face
like ET. Ken, Deirdre, Blanche and Hayley wait outside the delivery
room as Roy's in there with Tracy under her strict instructions to stay at
the top end. Roy and Hayley are delighted with the baby but the Barlow's
are livid and complain bitterly to Hayley about not being allowed into the
delivery room when Roy is. It's all Hayley can do not to tell
them about the money but she lets slip that Tracy and Roy are married,
which fair quietens Blanche, for a minute. It shocks Ken and Deirdre who
can't understand why Tracy would have married Roy when there was nothing
in it for her. After the baby's born, Tracy's straight on the phone
to Steve to tell him about his daughter, leaving the newly born baby alone
in the room for Roy to find and comfort. Steve drives back to the hospital
and Tracy shocks him when she tells him about the twenty five grand deal
with the Croppers. She says she'll keep the baby if he leaves Karen and lives
with her, but it's not something Steve is prepared to do and he walks out.
If the baby could have, it would have done the same.
Fred's back from Umbria this week and is surprised to hear that Ashley
and Claire still aren't an item. It weren't too cold in Umbria, he
tells Ashley in the Rovers, as he'd a couple of ganseys to keep him warm.
Claire pops into the Rovers for a drink with Maria after having her head
turned by the new family she'd been working for while Fred were away. They'd
given her a car to drive and had a swimming pool too when all Ashley can offer
her is two-for-one lamb chops and a free Cumberland ring.
Katy, Karl and Todd go to the Badly Drawn Boy gig and people are starting
to wonder if there's anything going on between Katy and Karl as the pair
of them seem very close. Tommy's hoping there is, Martin's suspecting
there is but it's all a storm in a latte glass with extra chocca-mocha-frocka
as Katy tells Martin Karl's gay.
And that's just about that for this week.
