The truth about Sam finally comes out this week when she admits
to Des that she was raped by her tennis coach, when she was in
her teens. Her confession comes about after Leanne Battersby gets
attacked by two ' friends' of Leanne's in the back yard of the
Battersby's house. Sam runs to help Leanne and chases the lads
away, bringing back memories of her own attack. She confides in
Des, and tells him about her failed marriage and why she ran away
from home, her parents still don't know about the rape as the
tennis coach was a friend of her father. Des offers to drive Samantha
to her parents house for a visit, and at first she changes her
mind, says she doesn't want to go but Des talks her round into
visiting. Before they pull up at Samantha's parent's house, she
feels strong enough to confront the tennis coach and asks Des
to drive her to his house, but when she finds the house it turns
out that the new owners bought the house from a widow, the tennis
coach died some years earlier. When Sam is reunited with her parents,
she tells Des to return to the street without her, she needs to
stay with her parents to talk things through. Des tells Curly
that Samantha is staying with her parents to look after her sick
mother, he's keeping Samantha's secret very close to his heart.
Rachel the estate agent goes on another date with Steve McDonald.
When Rachel asks him why he's still living with his dad and not
somewhere flashy like a flat on the quays, Steve comes out with
a great line "Oh, I've been there, done that, printed the
t-shirt". He lies to Rachel that his cruel and evil ex-wife
Vicky frittered away the profits from their t-shirt business and
so, of course, he just had to divorce her. Rachel guesses there's
something between Fiona and Steve after meeting Fi and Maxine
in the Rovers. Steve tells Rachel about his year in prison but
that only makes him sound more mysterious and alluring to her.
Fiona and Maxine go shopping for a wedding dress. While Maxine
wants the biggest, flounciest, whitest meringue-like dress she
can find for Fiona, Fiona wants something just a little more subdued.
"Oh" says Fiona "I think I've got butterflies in
my stomach". No Fiona, that's not butterflies, that's Jim
McDonald's baby!!
Sally has been let down by the child-minder so takes Rosie
and Sophie into the garage and demands that Kevin look after them
both while she's at work. Kevin is in a jam, how can he look after
2 small girls when he's working too? Kindly Aunty Natalie offers
to take the girls out for the day, and of course when Sally finds
out that Natalie has had her children all day, she is furious.
Natalie wants to be more involved in Kevin's life, including his
daughters, but Kevin isn't so sure that it's a good idea. He takes
the girls swimming and when he returns with them to Sally, she
invites him in and Sophie asks if daddy can stay for tea, which
he does, and Kevin and Sally are quite nice to each other. "Where
did we go wrong?" asks Kevin. To which my reply would have
been "When you slept with that old slapper, you stupid man"
but all Sally does is curl up her lip and cry.
Janice Battersby asks Angie if she'll take on Leanne as a machinist
at Underworld. Mike says there's no machinist vacancies but Leanne
can have a cleaning job. Leanne has obviously neither worked or
cleaned before in her life, because she isn't doing a very good
job of being a cleaner at all. When Baldwin walks in with a client
to be confronted by Leanne doing a Spice Girl imitation, he's
furious with Angie for allowing it to happen. Angie tells him
she's a partner, not an employee and stands her ground against
Mike. Good for her.
At last, this week, Angie and Curly actually went out together.
I was hoping it would turn into a red wine night of passion for
Curly but they just went out as friends while Des asked for the
house to himself to entertain Samantha.
Maude is worried that Maureen will marry Fred Eliot and leave
her all alone. A part time assistant is needed in the corner shop
and Maureen places an ad. in the window.
Mavis reminisces about Derek as it's his birthday, while Audrey
leers at Les Battersby who's in a vest in the Rovers - has that
woman no shame (or taste)? The Battersby's are still in everyone's
bad books when Les buys a clapped out old Lada and parks it outside
of their house. "Do you know how to double the value of that
car?" asks Kevin "Put some petrol in it!".
Jim McDonald and Bill have a heart to heart, when Bill guesses
that something is wrong. Jim tells Bill about this "wee girl"
he's just met and tries to explain his problem above being in
love with Fiona, without mentioning Fiona, as such, by name.
Judy tells Zoe that she wants her to leave as soon as the baby
is born, and of course Zoe doesn't want to hear this, she thought
she'd found a cosy place to peg her coat for a few months. Things
become strained between Judy and Zoe, and Gary tells Judy that
he doesn't want to have Zoe's baby, he wants to adopt and do it
all legally. Zoe walks out, leaving a frantic Judy behind, but
she does return later, demanding £1,000 right now and the
second £1,000 after the birth.
And in the Rovers, there's a great scene when Alec does an
impersonation of the famous Cissy (from his Les Dawson days).
Referring to Judy, who's called in sick to the pub, Vera tells
Alec that Judy has 'women's problems....'. "Oh" says
Alec "you mean... down below". Pure magic.
And that's all for this week.
Glenda :-)
